The Tonka bean is native to South America and the Caribbean. It is the fruit of a hardwood tree from the Fabaceae family, known as Dipteryx odorata.
This tree is also referred to as coumarou, coumaron, coumarine, or Brazilian teak.
The Tonka bean was historically used by the Tupi Indians, an indigenous group from the Brazilian coast, to flavor tobacco. The names Tonka and Kumaru (coumarine) come from the Tupi language/dialect.
Due to the presence of coumarin in Tonka beans, its usage is heavily regulated, and it appears in fragrance compositions in very limited amounts.

From a psycho-emotional perspective, with its delightful aroma, Tonka bean can enhance the feeling of tranquility generated by other essential oils already present in the perfume composition.
