Frankincense, also known as olibanum, is derived from a tree called Boswellia, which grows in the eastern desert regions. By incising the tree's bark, an aromatic gum resin is obtained, sometimes referred to as "tears of Somalia." Considered a sacred tree, Boswellia was revered by ancient civilizations.

The incense trees were as precious and sought after as gold, sparking numerous expeditions and even causing wars. The queen of Sheba in Somalia sought the help of King Solomon to protect her incense crops. Fifteen centuries BCE, Queen Hatshepsut had the images of thirty-one incense trees engraved on the rocks of Deir el-Bahari, brought from the land of God by her expeditions.

Phoenicians, Egyptians, and Hebrews conducted significant trade in frankincense. They all left written testimonies about the ritual practices and medicinal uses of incense, particularly for the healing of deep wounds.
Regardless of culture or religion, incense is perceived as the ultimate means of communication between humans and celestial powers. Its incomparable fragrance makes it an interesting essential oil to inhale during meditation.
